KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee's cross country squad held its annual awards banquet Wednesday night at Calhoun's on the River. Head cross country coach George Watts spoke about the events of the 2000 season and previewed team goals for the 2001 campaign.
"We've got a group of guys in here that can qualify for the NCAA Championships for the next two years, and that's not even taking our signees into account," Watts said.
Marcus Tanner, a senior from Chiefland, Fla., took home the nod as Most Valuable Runner in an almost unanimous vote by the squad. Vince Dressel, a freshman from Colbert, Wash., earned the Vega-Watts Volunteer Award presented for the 21st year to the individual who made the greatest sacrifice to compete for the team. The award is sponsored by former Vol distance greats and teammates Sal Vega (1977-79) and Watts (1976-78). The Most Improved Award went to Paul Hallman, a freshman from Langhorne, Pa.
Captain Awards went to Eric Bell, a junior from Farragut, and Scott Defilippis, a sophomore from Colonia, N.J. Additionally, letter awards were earned by Bell, Rob Cloutier, Defilippis, Dressel, Hallman, Keith Kimmons, Tanner and Clay Wiggins.
