Knoxville, Tenn. (May 6) - Chris Burke went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI, and Jeff Baumtrog collected four hits as the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores, 15-5, to win their first SEC home series since defeating Georgia last season.
Tennessee improved to 38-20 and 9-15 in the Southeastern Conference, inching within a half game of the Mississippi Rebels for the eighth slot in the league tournament. Vanderbilt, which fell to 21-29 and 5-20 in the conference, was eliminated from tournament contention.
Burke's three hits gave him 100 on the season as he joined former Vols Todd Helton and Jeff Pickler as the only players in school history to collect 100 hits.
Tennessee also became the first school in SEC history to steal 200 bases in a season as it swiped seven, giving it 204.
Wyatt Allen (4-2) logged seven innings in picking up the win, allowing two runs on four hits.
Chris Maultsby (1-4) suffered the loss after he faced nine men in the first, allowing six runs on four hits. Two-run singles by Jeff Baumtrog and Kris Bennett highlighted the six-run first as Stevie Daniel added a run scoring triple and Ryan Moffett hit a sacrifice fly.
Vanderbilt scratched for two runs in the second and third on Sean Luellwitz's sacrifice fly and Karl Nonemaker's single respectively to pull within 6-2.
Burke drove in Tennessee's next four runs with a two-run single in the third and a two-run double in the fifth as the Vols took a commanding 10-2 lead after five.
They added three more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Justin Parker and a two-run triple by Ryan Case for a 13-2 advantage.
Vanderbilt struck for three runs in the eighth on a two-run home run by Adam Blue and an RBI double by Scott Vanderhoff, while the Vols tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth for the final 15-5 margin.
