Player Updates Adam Carey Dual matches: 22-3, 11-2 (SEC) ITA rank: 60 Last match: def. Assaf Drori of North Carolina 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 on May 14. Carey has made the jump to the No. 2 position for the NCAA tournament. Carey had previously seen most of his action at the No. 3 and No. 4 slots before the tournament. Carey has an overall dual match record of 42-8 during his two-year career. His dual match winning percentage is an impressive .860 during that span. Carey also leads the SEC in victories with 41 and is tied for seventh place on the Vols' single season wins list with Byron Talbot. He is also fifth on the all-time winning percentage list with a .760 clip. Carey has a career record of 61-19.
Andy Crews George Dubrava Dual matches: 3-0 ITA rank: N/A Last match: def. Jeff Lewis of Jacksonville 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 on March 22. Dubrava saw his first action since Jan. 20 when he played in two dual matches on March 22. He recorded two victories at No. 6 against Lehigh and Jacksonville to run his dual match record to 3-0.
He posted his first collegiate victory over Craig Mione of Murray State 6-2, 6-1 on Jan. 15. He has also compiled a 1-1 overall doubles record with Adam Carey. Mark Fitzpatrick Dual matches: 19-4, 9-4 (SEC) ITA rank: N/A Last match: def. Chad Riley of North Carolina 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 on May 14. Fitzpatrick has posted 30 wins for the first time in his three-year career. In fact, coming into the 2000 season, Fitzpatrick only had 20 career singles wins. Fitzpatrick has also run up an impressive 21-7 doubles record with Paul Podbury. The pair play as the Vols' Nos. 1 and 2 teams and have a 17-7 dual match record, which ranks second on the team. They are also formidable in SEC play (9-4) and earned a spot in the ITA doubles poll at No. 52. Fitzpatrick is the only Vol to win a tournament in singles and doubles this season. He won the "B" division singles title at the South Carolina Fall Invitational, and also claimed the "B" division doubles title with Podbury on Oct. 24.
Peter Handoyo Dual matches: 19-6, 8-4 (SEC) ITA rank: 56 Last match: def. David Cheatwood of North Carolina 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 on May 14. Handoyo is second on the Vol squad in singles wins with 35. He is first in wins over ranked players with 13, and leads the team in doubles wins with 26. Handoyo has seen time in the Vols' singles lineup at the Nos. 1-4 positions. He has produced two wins at No. 1, five at No. 2, 11 at No. 3 and one at No. 4. Handoyo also added the SEC Indoor doubles title to his list of accomplishments this season. Previously, he had won the ITA Rookie of the Year award in 1999, the 1998 Region 3 Indoor Championships and gained All-America honors in 1999.
Mark Parsons Paul Podbury Dual matches: 19-3, 11-0 (SEC) ITA rank: 78 Last match: def. Jordan Goetzman of UT-Chattanooga 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 on May 13. Podbury is enjoying his finest season as a Vol. His 34 singles wins and 23 total doubles wins are both career highs. He is the only Vol in school history to go undefeated in SEC dual matches in singles play. He has also been ranked in the ITA top 100 for most of the spring season. He is currently No. 78. His first ranking came after his impressive run at the SEC Indoor Championships Jan. 20-24. Podbury advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Indoors as an unseeded player. He fell in three tough sets to No. 29 Matias Boeker of Georgia in the round of four. He has also advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Region 3 Championships and the semifinals of the Georgia Southern Collegiate Championships "A" flight this season. He has also posted a 17-7 dual match doubles record with Mark Fitzpatrick. The duo is 9-4 in SEC play.
