March 11, 2000 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE-Arkansas's Brian Kirby went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Razorbacks to a 14-5 win over Tennessee on Saturday.
Arkansas (13-6, 2-0) extended its winning streak to eight games while dropping Tennessee (17-6, 0-2) for the sixth straight time.
Arkansas used an early rally for the second straight game to take a sizeable lead that they would not relinquish as Tennessee has yet to lead on the scoreboard through 18 innings. Vol pitcher Jordan DeJong walked lead-off batter Jack Welsh to start the game and Welsh scored two batters later off a fielder's choice by Scott Crossett. DeJong gave up three runs off three hits in the inning to give Arkansas a 3-0 lead.
The Vols mounted a comeback in their half of the third when designated hitter Jeff Christensen hit an RBI single to score Kris Bennett. The Vols managed one final run in the inning after a balk by Arkansas pitcher Cliff Lee scored Stevie Daniel.
It was deja vu for the Vols in the sixth as Chris Blum hit a two-run home run to give Arkansas a 7-2 lead. Blum hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth last night to extend the Hog lead to 7-1. The home run was Blum's only hit of the game.
Heavy rain forced a 62-minute rain delay in the sixth inning with Arkansas leading 6-2. Following the delay, Tennessee rallied in the seventh by scoring two runs to pull within three. Arkansas denied the Vol rally by scoring seven runs on four hits and two UT errors in the top of the eigth to preserve the win.
Arkansas's Brian Kirby extended his hitting streak to 11 games while Vol third base man Kris Bennett extended his streak to 15 games. Cliff Lee (4-0) took the win for Arkansas while Jordan DeJong fell to 3-2 on the season with the loss.
The Vols will complete the three-game series with Arkansas with a noon match-up on Sunday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
