KNOXVILLE -- Kris Bennett went 6-of-10 at the plate to lead the Tennessee Volunteers to a two game sweep of the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday.
Tennessee (10-4) entered today's doubleheader with Appalachian State on a two-game win streak while the Mountaineers (0-7) came to Knoxville fresh off two losses to No. 1 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
In the first game, Tennessee connected on 10 hits while getting home runs from Brandon Hopkins and Justin Parker who popped their first sky balls of the season. The Vols took a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to Parker's home run and an RBI by Chris Burke. Tennessee roughed up the Mountaineers in the eighth inning by scoring four runs off just two hits.
Junior Kris Bennett, fresh off an MVP performance at the Winn-Dixie Shootout last weekend, went 4-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Vols to a 10-2 win in game 2 of the doubleheader. Appalachian State jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-run home run by Michael Lee in the top of the fourth. The Vols, however, countered the Mountaineer scoring with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.
Sophomore Brian Gates (3-1) took the win in the first game for Tennessee while junior Jordan DeJong (3-1) notched the win in the second. Jason Howell (0-2) and Tyson Blocker (0-1) took the losses for Appalachian state respectively.
Tennessee will conclude the three-game series with Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
