February 26, 2000 | Softball
The Tennessee softball squad took to the field again in the second day of the Reebok Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., on Sat., Feb. 26 and defeated host Georgia Southern 2-0 in its first matchup and Coastal Carolina in the second with a score of 3-0.
The Orange and White hit the diamond at 3:15 p.m. with pitcher Jackie Beavers on the mound and took the lead from Georgia Southern in the first inning off a single to center field by Adrianna Wilson that scored Janette Koshell from second base. The Lady Vols would never look back, adding an insurance run in the fifth, again off a line shot by Wilson as her double to center field led to Holly Ellison's scoring jaunt from second. Beavers (4-2) allowed five hits in her winning shutout effort.
Next up, the Lady Vols took on Coastal Carolina at 5:15 p.m. and freshman Stephanie "Killer" Humphrey led her squad to a 3-0 win allowing just four hits in seven innings of shutout ball. "Killer" is now 2-1 on the young season. UT jumped on Coastal in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring all three of its runs beginning with Mellisa Radley's single to right field that scored Maura Mollet from second. Junior Holly Ellison would later single scoring April Philips and Radley. Coastal Carolina's Lauren Yates allowed seven hits in six innings of action on the way to the team's ninth loss of the season.
Tennessee will take to Eagle field again on Sunday as the tournament's top seed taking on the fifth seed at 1:00 p.m. eastern.
