Lady Vols Eliminated from 2000 ITA Regional Play

WINTSON-SALEM, N.C. (Nov. 5, 2000) -- The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers' run at the 2000 ITA Southeast Qualifying Championships was cut short on November 5 as juniors Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) and Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) were eliminated in singles play and the doubles tandem of Ojeda and sophomore Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R./Academia San Jose Villa Caparra) suffered a setback on the doubles side.
Ojeda defeated Kentucky's Lauren Rookledge in her first match of the day, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. In quarterfinal action, Ojeda dropped a tough three-set match to Maren Haus of Wake Forest, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Wiski fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Marlene Mejia of North Carolina in the round of sixteen.
The Orange and White pairing of Ojeda and Castellvi faced Kentucky's Rookledge and Brooke Skeen in the semifinals of the doubles draw. The Wildcats earned a measure of revenge as Rookledge avenged her singles' loss to Ojeda with a close 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2), victory over the Lady Vols.
The Southeast Regional qualifier is one of eight taking place across the country this weekend. Finalists in both the singles and doubles brackets advances to the Rolex National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas in February.
The 2000 ITA Southeast Regional Qualifying Championships concludes the Lady Vols fall tournament schedule. The Big Orange will return to action in January when the team will compete at the Adidas Tournament in Orland Florida from January 26-28.
