KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2000) -- Junior Young-A Yang fired a one-over 73 on October 13 and teammate Tina Schneeberger was one stroke back at 74, thanks to the first-ever hole-in-one (on 13) at this event, to pace second-place Tennessee to a first-round score of 302, two shots back of Duke at the fourth-annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at Gettysvue Polo, Golf & Country Club.
"I am really pleased with the team today," stated first-year head coach Judi Pavon. "This course is really hard to shoot low scores on and to be so close to Duke is a great surprise. We are going to try and stay close to Duke until Sunday afternoon, and then try to pull off the victory."
"We have nothing to lose," added Schneeberger, "They are number one and we are behind them trying to catch them." In regard to today's round, Schneeberger was relieved because this is the first time in the event's history that the team has had success. Coming into the 2000 event, the Lady Vols had never finished higher than eighth and never shot a round lower than 305.
Yang paced the Orange and White with a one-over 73 and now sits in a five-way tie for fifth place. Schneeberger chipped in with another stellar round to continue her fine season with a 74, including a hole-in-one on the 174-yard 13th hole. Sophomore Erin Simmons (The Woodlands, Texas) added a 77 and is among the top-20 finishers on day one. Junior Carrie Cole (Mansfield, Texas) recorded a 78, including putting in a shot five feet from the hole on 18 to make birdie. Freshman Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) made her home debut and carded an 82. Rounding out the Tennessee contingent as an individual was senior Anna Umemura (Honolulu, Hawaii) with a 78.
"I am really proud of Young-A today," said Pavon, "She had a couple of bad holes, but then came on strong when we needed her to. Tina looked great the whole day, and I was really excited for her when I saw the ball fall for the hole-in-one."
Play continues tomorrow at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf and Country Club with the Lady Vols looking to end Duke's bid to win its third straight title this year, and Duke's third title in four years at the Mercedes. Tennessee and Duke square off on the links again tomorrow as both teams start teeing off on hole number one at 9 a.m. Eastern
