Lady Vol Inaugural Tennis Tournament A Huge Success

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team made an impressive showing at the Inaugural St. Mary’s Health System Classic held at the UT Varsity Courts this past weekend (Oct. 15-17). Co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick watched as the Orange and White went 27-8 in combined singles/doubles matches, including a sparkling 10-2 in doubles action.
Senior Candy Reid (Surrey, England/Epsom & Ewell) led the way for the Lady Vols, as she posted wins in the No. 4 singles draw as well as teaming with sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) to win the No. 2 doubles bracket. Reid defeated Charlotte Pernot of Georgia Tech 7-5, 7-5, to take the No. 4 flight, while the duo downed Pernot and Jaime Wong of the Yellow Jackets, 8-1, in doubles. Freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla./Westminster Academy) had another strong performance in improving to 5-1 in singles on the year. The rookie captured the No. 5 singles flight with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Linda Mattson of Mississippi State.
In doubles action, the tandem of sophomores Dana Noel (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) and Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) dropped a 8-2 decision to Jessica Lehnhoff and Julia Scaringe of Florida in the championship match of the No. 1 doubles bracket. Cleveland and sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) earned the Lady Vols another doubles title, as the duo outlasted Ivana Belancic and Mattson of Mississippi State, 8-5, for the No. 3 doubles crown.
In other action, Ojeda finished second in No. 1 singles, Noel was runner-up in No. 3 singles, while freshman Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R./Academia San Jose Villa Caparra) and Parks were each third at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Additionally, junior Catherine Hall (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and Wiski concluded the tournament with fourth place finishes in the No. 6 and No. 2 singles positions.
The Tennessee trio of Castellvi, Ojeda and Wiski will next be in action at qualifying play for the All-American Tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif., beginning on Tuesday (Oct. 19-24).
