YOUNG[apos]S PROFILE | |
In her fourth season with the Lady Volunteer volleyball program is former Georgia Bulldog standout and assistant coach Cindy Young. Her primary responsibilities at UT include acting as summer camp director, managing team travel, handling equipment and statistics, assisting with recruiting and working directly with middle blockers.
In her three years at Tennessee, Young has helped lead the Lady Vols to heights they have never before reached. During that time, the Big Orange has recorded an impressive record of 79-21 (.790), the best three-year span in UT history. A number of players under her guidance have also served up outstanding performances, as Kristen Andre achieved All-America status twice, AVCA First Team in 2005 and Honorable Mention in 2004, while fellow middle blocker Sarah Blum has become the all-time blocks/game leader at Tennessee.
Young served as the head volleyball coach for Athens Academy in Georgia prior to joining Tennessee. In her only season with the school, she led the squad to the 2002 A/AA state championship match. For her efforts, she was named the Georgia High School Association[apos]s Coach of the Year. Young was also a health and physical education instructor for the institution as well.
As an assistant coach for the University of Georgia from 1996-01, Young was responsible for all facets relating to the operation of the team, including team training, recruiting, academic advising, statistical analysis, organization of team travel, event management and coordinating home tournaments. She was also in charge of running Georgia[apos]s summer volleyball camp. Young has also served as an instructor at numerous other volleyball camps for more than a decade.
The Bonita Springs, Fla., native did not limit herself to working strictly with Georgia[apos]s volleyball team, as she was an event management intern for the Bulldogs in spring 2001, when she assisted the school in hosting the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. Young was primarily accountable for directing and organizing all activities relating to the NCAA YES Clinic. She also assisted with hospitality for the event.
Georgia compiled an impressive record of 79-24 (.767) during Young[apos]s playing days as an outside hitter under the tutelage of former Head Coach Jim Iams. The Bulldogs also finished with a 34-8 (.810) regular-season mark in SEC competition and finished second at the league tournament on two occasions during that time. Georgia competed in the NCAA Tournament in each of Young[apos]s seasons, reaching the Sweet 16 in 1993 for the third time in school history.
Young was no stranger to success in the classroom, either, as she was named to the University of Georgia Director[apos]s Honor Roll from 1991-96. She was also a Fort Myers Rotary Scholar-Athlete Scholarship recipient in 1991. Volunteer work also played a role during Young[apos]s tenure as a player, as she offered her services to the 1996 Olympic Games and the Georgia Special Olympics from 1992-95.
Young earned her B.S. in exercise sport science from UGA in March 1996. While she was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs, Young also received a master[apos]s degree in sport management in May 2001.
