A former standout with Tennessee's men's tennis program, Jarryd Chaplin returned to Rocky Top in July of 2019 to serve on the coaching staff for UT's women's team. The 2022-23 season is Chaplin's fourth on Alison Ojeda's staff.
After starring for the Lady Vols in an assistant coach capacity for two years, Chaplin was promoted to associate head coach in June of 2021—a month after the squad finished the 2021 season ranked 18th nationally in the final ITA poll.
Jarryd Chaplin is one of the best on-court coaches I have ever seen," Ojeda said. "He has a natural ability to concisely deliver a message that commands a sense of urgency from our players. Every student-athlete on our team has improved since he has joined our program. If there is an advantage to be gained, Jarryd will find it. We both embrace the study of tennis analytics, and the data that we accrue from it helps to separate us from our competition."
Tennessee has posted top-25 finishes in the ITA rankings in each of Chaplin's three seasons with the program.
The spring of 2022 saw Chaplin take a large jump in his responsibilities with the team, leading the Lady Vols for the final three weeks of the regular season and the SEC Tournament while coach Ojeda was on maternity leave. The team went on a semifinal run at the tournament in Gainesville, Florida and earned a victory over 12th-ranked Auburn. Yet again, Chaplin was instrumental in the develop of skills for the Lady Vols, helping three different individuals and five doubles pairs to the ranked charts.
Chaplin came back to Knoxville in 2019 from nearby Nashville, where he spent two years coaching at Vanderbilt—the 2018-19 season as an assistant with the women's program, and the 2017-18 campaign as a volunteer assistant on the men's side.
"Jarryd is an excellent coach and has made an immediate impact on our program," Ojeda said. "Every time I coached against him, I came away impressed with his on-court coaching style. He truly understands the game and is able to adjust during the match. In spending time with him, you can feel his passion and energy for not just tennis but for the University of Tennessee."
While Chaplin's first season on staff with the Lady Vols was shortened due to the COVID-19 global health crisis, he did help Tennessee post a 10-3 record with five shutout wins before action was halted nationwide.
In his second season on Ojdea’s staff the Lady Vols earned a 17-9, 8-5 SEC record. Tennessee went undefeated at home for just the fourth time in program history, authoring an unscathed 11-0 record. The Big Orange also posted nine shutouts and earned nine wins against ranked opponents in the 2021 spring campaign.
As a collegiate player, Chaplin, who hails from Sydney, Australia, competed for the Vols from 2011-14.
"I am incredibly grateful to Coach Ojeda and the University of Tennessee Athletics Department for giving me this opportunity to return to a place that holds some of my fondest memories on and off the tennis court," Chaplin said upon his hiring in 2019. "I look forward to working alongside Coach Ojeda and continuing the Lady Vols' rise toward the top of the SEC and the nation."
Over the course of his four years as a student-athlete in Knoxville, Chaplin compiled a 74-44 doubles record and 64-55 singles record, earning second-team All-SEC honors in 2013.
Chaplin was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for three straight years from 2012-14. In his professional career on tour, Chaplin achieved an ATP doubles career-high ranking of No. 155.
