SEC MEET RECAP
- Won his first individual SEC medal - a bronze - in the 200 backstroke (1:40.75)
- Earned a second silver medal as a part the 200 medley relay team (1:24.04)

- Set the fourth-fastest 200 IM in school history at 1:44.71
- Other top times in the regular season: 100 back (46.07), 200 back (1:41.42), 100 butterfly (50.17)

NCAA MEET RECAP
- Tallied a the sixth-place finish as a part of the 200 medley relay (1:23.96), placed 16th in the 200 back (1:42.10), and participated in both the 200 IM and 100 back

- Logged a second-place finish as a part of the 200 medley relay (1:22.79), finished fifth in the 200 back (1:41.03), notched a 10th-place time in the 100 back (46.44), and placed 15th in the 200 IM (1:46.32)

- Set four personal-bests, three NCAA B Cut times, and tallied five individual wins
- Logged the fifth-fastest time in both the 200 backstroke (1:41.57) and the 200 individual medley (1:45.86) in Vols history

2017-18 - SOPHOMORE
SEC MEET RECAP
- Reached his first SEC championship final, placing sixth in the 100 backstroke (46.69); he swam an even faster 46.49 in the prelims
- Placed 11th in the 200 backstroke (1:42.36) and 29th in the 200 IM (1:47.66)
DUAL MEET RECAP
- Competed in eight meets during the season, notably winning the 100 back and taking second in the 200 back in a fall victory over Louisville on the road
- At the Tennessee Invitational, swam a 1:44.02 in the 200 back and a 46.94 in the 100 back on the first leg of the 400 medley relay
2016-17 - FRESHMAN
SEC MEET RECAP
- Scored in first conference meet, finishing 21st in the 100 back (47.86) and 22nd in the 200 back (1:45.31). He swam a 1:44.20 in the 200 back prelims.
- Also finished 47th in the 200 free (1:39.57)
DUAL MEET RECAP
- Best meet during the fall came in the home semester finale against Auburn, where he placed second in the 100 backstroke (49.78) and third in the 200 backstroke (1:48.78 - top time of the fall). His best time in the 100 backstroke during his first semester was 49.73 at the NC State GAC Invitational.
PRIOR TO TENNESSEE
- Member of the 2015 YMCA National Champion Sarasota Sharks
- At the 2015 YMCA National Championships, finished third in the 200 backstroke, sixth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 butterfly.
- Led off the third-place 400 medley relay and the eighth-place 200 medley relay

- Garcia on Why Tennessee: "I chose Tennessee for the motivated team atmosphere, the scientific coaching philosophy, and I can continue my strength and conditioning training with Vern Gambetta."
- Kredich says: "Matthew is a fantastic fit for our program. He's a very positive and driven young man who is going to make an immediate impact on our team. He's got three very good strokes, he has really good underwater speed, is a tough competitor, and is very good technically. Matthew is still developing rapidly and is familiar with a lot of what we do already, especially on land, so his transition should be pretty smooth. He helps us fill our backstroke needs and has put himself in a position to be able to help our relays immediately."
