David Kasanganay

Graduate assistant David Kasanganay (kuh-SUNG-guh-nye) joined Rick Barnes’ men’s basketball staff at the University of Tennessee as a graduate assistant in the summer of 2023.
During his first season with the Volunteers, 2023-24, the team went 27-9, won the SEC regular season title, reached the Elite Eight and finished a program-best fifth in the national polls.
Before coming to Rocky Top, Kasanganay played three seasons as a guard at East Carolina from 2020-23. He initially joined the program as a walk-on before eventually earning a scholarship.
As a team captain in 2022-23 under former Tennessee associate head coach Mike Schwartz, Kasanganay helped lead the Pirates to their best record in 10 years. He earned a degree in communications in 2022 and later added a graduate certificate in public management & leadership in 2023, both from East Carolina.
Kasanganay began his college basketball career at the U.S. Naval Academy from 2018-20. A junior officer, he gained experience in boat management and learned valuable leadership qualities under higher-ranking officers.
A graduate of Ardrey Kell High School in his hometown of Charlotte, N.C., Kasanganay finished his four-year prep career third on the school’s all-time leading scoring list. His brother, Impa, is a prominent MMA fighter.
