Peyton Manning's legend will never die. He finished his illustrious career holding 42 NCAA, SEC and Tennessee records. Following the 1997 season, Manning captured the Maxwell Award as the nation's most outstanding player, the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Player of the Year honors his senior season, securing his All-America status in 1997. He also won the Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete. The Tennessee quarterback became the fourth in NCAA history to pass for 11,000 yards and threw for more than 300 yards in 18 games. He finished with 11,201 yards as Tennessee's most prolific offensive player in leading the Vols to the 1997 SEC Championship. Manning's No. 16 jersey was retired by Tennessee on Oct. 29, 2005. He was the No. 1 draft pick in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts and went on to win two Super Bowls during an 18-year, Hall of Fame career in the NFL.
1997 - SENIOR
- Finished his illustrious career with a 39-6 record as a starter and standing as the SEC's all-time career passing leader, with 11,201 yards (third on all-time NCAA list).
- His 89 career touchdown passes ranked second in SEC history and fourth all-time on the NCAA chart.
- During his Tennessee career, he set 33 school records, seven SEC records and two NCAA passing records.

- Selected as the quarterback on the CFA Scholar-Athlete Team and was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll with a 3.51 GPA in Speech Communications.
- The Phi Beta Kappa selection's extensive list of academic honors also included second-team Academic All-America, Academic All-District IV and America Honda Scholar Athlete.
- Finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.
- Became UT's first quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a single season (3,287), breaking his own school record.
- Finished the season holding 28 Tennessee game, season or career records, including career passing yards (7,382) and completions (576).

- Led the Vols to a 7-1 record as a starter and was named Freshman of the Year in the SEC.
- Finished the regular season with 89 completions on 144 pass attempts (.618) for 1,141 yards.
- Hitting 12 of 19 passes for 189 yards and breaking loose for a 29-yard run, he sparked the Vols to a 45-23 conquest of Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl (12/30/1994).
