Tennessee graduate Trey Johnson returned to Rocky Top as defensive scouting coordinator on Josh Heupel’s staff in the spring of 2021, and he was promoted to Director of Recruiting following the 2023 season. The 2024 campaign will be his fourth as a member of Heupel’s staff.
Johnson oversees the day-to-day recruiting operations and has been instrumental in helping the Volunteers sign three consecutive top-15 classes. His tenure has seen the Vols enjoy their best two-year stretch on the field in two decades, including victories in the 2023 Orange Bowl and 2024 Citrus Bowl.
Johnson returned to Knoxville after serving as the director of scouting and recruiting strategy at Southern Cal from 2019-20. USC signed a top 10 class in December 2020 under his watch. He was in charge of all of the Trojans’ nationally-acclaimed social media platforms and team branding and strategy. He was promoted to that role after originally being hired as the assistant director of player personnel in 2018.
Johnson came to USC after serving as the director of player personnel and pro scout liaison at Liberty in 2017. The Flames landed their highest-rated recruiting class during his time there. He assisted Liberty’s football staff with their interaction with high school and junior college players and coaches from around the country and helped facilitate the prospective student-athlete (PSA) evaluation process and the PSA database. He also assisted with all aspects of travel related to official visits, including scheduling and transportation, plus ensured that all NCAA mandated paperwork is completed in a timely manner during the official visit process.
Additionally, he helped coordinate the social media efforts for the various Liberty Football social media accounts. He also coordinated NFL scout visits and executed Liberty’s Pro Day.
Prior to joining Liberty's staff, Johnson spent four seasons from 2013-16 working on Tennessee’s football staff, including his last two years as a graduate assistant in recruiting. The Volunteers’ recruiting classes ranked in the nation’s top 15 during each of his years with the program, including No. 5 for the Class of 2015. During his first two years, he served as a recruiting analyst before transitioning into the graduate assistant role.
Johnson also spent a year working as a marketing associate at Tennessee, assisting with social media outreach to all incoming and prospective UT students.
Johnson received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Tennessee. He completed a bachelor's degree in business and sports management in 2015 and a master's degree in recreation and sports management in 2016.
He attended Boyd Buchanan High in Chattanooga. He was named team captain for the football and basketball teams as a senior, while serving as the FCA president for two years.
Johnson is engaged to Katelyn Hadder.
