Samantha Howell is in her third year at Tennessee, where she works as an assistant athletic trainer for the football program. She joined the sports medicine staff in 2018 after completing a two-year graduate assistantship at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
During her first two years on Rocky Top, Howell has assisted in the day-to-day medical coverage for UT’s football team. The Vols made significant improvements on the field in 2019, going 8-5 after winning their final five games of the regular season before defeating Indiana in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.
While at James Madison, she worked with the football and women’s golf teams and earned her Master of Science in Kinesiology. During her time working with JMU football, the Dukes boasted a 28-2 record and made appearances in back-to-back National Championship games, winning the FCS National Championship in 2016.
Prior to her arrival at James Madison, Howell spent two years working as an assistant athletic trainer for the football team at Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida. During this time, she also gained experience working with several other sports teams including softball, baseball and volleyball.
From 2013-2014, Howell served as an intern athletic trainer at Savannah State University in Georgia. She assisted the head athletic trainer with the Division I football program while also serving as the primary athletic trainer for the men’s and women’s track and field teams.
A native of Virginia, Howell earned her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from James Madison in 2013. She is currently a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and holds a certification in Blood Flow Restriction Training.
