While Lester McClain's accomplishments on the field were enough to etch his name in the record books, his true legacy expands to this day and for generations to come. The Antioch, Tennessee, native was the first Black student-athlete at the University of Tennessee, playing varsity football from 1968-70. In 1968, he became the first Black SEC player to score a touchdown when he hauled in his first of two scoring receptions during UT's 24-7 win at Georgia Tech on Oct. 12. The foundation laid by McClain paved the way for other Black athletes at UT, including Condredge Holloway, who was the first Black starting quarterback in the SEC, and Tee Martin, who led the Vols to their 1998 championship and became the first Black quarterback in the SEC to win a national title. McClain's on-field contributions included catching 70 passes for 1,003 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed 30 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns and returned eight kickoffs for 168 yards. McClain was selected by the Chicago Bears in the ninth round in the 1971 NFL Draft. On Sept. 2, 2021, McClain was among four Black Tennessee football trailblazers who were honored with statues of their likeness dedicated outside of Gate 21 at Neyland Stadium.
