Luke Bonfield joined Tennessee's staff as a graduate student manager prior to the 2020 season after a productive collegiate career at the University of Arkansas and two years of professional baseball in the independent league. He was promoted to Director of Player Development in September 2021 and moved into a new role as the Director of Recruiting Operations following the 2024 season.
Bonfield helps coach Tennessee's outfielders along with his other daily responsibilities.
During his five seasons on staff, the Volunteers have made four NCAA Tournament appearances (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024), three trips to the College World Series (2021, 2023, 2024) and captured the program's first national championship (2024). Tennessee has also won four combined SEC Titles in that time, pulling off the double by winning the regular season and tournament crowns in 2022 and 2024.Â
During his career at Arkansas, Bonfield played for current Vols' head coach Tony Vitello, who was the Razorbacks' top assistant and recruiting coordinator at the time.  Bonfield played outfield and was a .287 career hitter, totaling 199 hits, 120 runs scored, 26 home runs and 139 RBI during his four seasons in Fayetteville. The Skillman, New Jersey, native helped lead the Razorbacks to the 2018 College World Series, where the Hogs finished as the runner-up. As a senior in 2018, Bonfield hit .296 with 10 doubles, nine homers and 44 RBI.Â
Prior to his time at Arkansas, Bonfield was a top prospect who played prep baseball at IMG Academy in Florida and Immaculata High School in New Jersey. He was rated the 57th-best recruit in the nation by Perfect Game and was selected by the New York Mets in the 21st round of the 2014 MLB Draft.Â
