DEFINITIONS
NCAA Recruiting Page - Includes important definitions and frequently asked questions.ÂWhat is a recruiting shutdown?
A recruiting shutdown is a period of time when no form of recruiting (e.g., contacts, evaluations, official, or unofficial visits, correspondence or making or receiving telephone calls) is permissible.
When may coaches start to contact me for recruitment?
Please see the attached First Opportunity for Recruiting Activity chart detailing recruiting activity timelines by sport.
Prospective Student-Athlete:
An individual becomes a "prospective student-athlete" when he/she begins classes for the ninth-grade and remains a "prospective student-athlete" until enrollment at a four-year institution. Prior to ninth grade, prospective student-athlete status is triggered if a university provides any financial aid or benefits that the college does not provide to prospective students generally.
Recruited Prospective Student-Athlete:
A prospective student-athlete becomes a "recruited prospective student-athlete" at a particular college if a coach or representative of the college's athletics interests (booster, alumnus or fan) approaches him/her (or a family member) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that trigger recruited status are:
- Providing the prospective student-athlete with an official visit;
- Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete's family members; or
- Issuing a National Letter of Intent or the institution's written offer of athletically related financial aid to the prospective student-athlete. Issuing a written offer of athletically related financial aid to a prospective student-athlete to attend a summer session prior to full-time enrollment does not cause the prospective student-athlete to become recruited.
