Marin & Appenzeller Recognized on National Award Lists
April 23, 2026 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of Vols were recognized by national awards on Wednesday in sophomore shortstop Manny Marin and freshman pitcher Cam Appenzeller.
Marin was one of the nation's top shortstops as he was one of 50 players to be named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award , which is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to the top shortstop in college baseball .
Appenzeller was one of 62 pitchers on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List, which recognizes the best relief pitchers in college baseball.
After taking hold of the starting shortstop spot for the Vols, Marin has proven to be one of the team's best all-around players, ranking among the team leaders in batting average (.295), doubles (seven), home runs (seven) and RBIs (30).
The Florida native has also been one of the SEC's top defenders, having committed just three errors while boasting a .979 fielding percentage in 143 chances and a team-leading 88 assists.
Appenzeller has burst onto the scene as a true freshman and quickly become one of the SEC's most dominant relievers. The ultra-talented right-hander leads Tennessee with a 5-1 record on the year and also has a save in 12 relief appearances. He also leads all pitchers on the team (min. 20 IP) with a 2.79 ERA and 0.85 WHIP to go along with 44 strikeouts and just seven walks in 38.2 innings pitched.
Appenzeller's start to conference play was especially eye-opening, as he did not allow a single run over his first 21.2 innings of league play. Three of his five wins this year have come against SEC competition.
Finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award will be named in May while the NCBWA will announce the finalists for the Stopper of the Year on Wednesday, June 3, with the winner being named on Friday, June 12, at the 2026 Men's College World Series.
