Lady Vols Overwhelm Delaware State in Sweep

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Tennessee Volleyball (6-1) got its weekend started in style, earning a sweep over Delaware State (25-19, 25-10, 25-17) at Carnesecca Arena.
Three Lady Vols finished with double-digit kills, with Mackenzie Plante notching a career-high 12 kills. She was tied for the team lead in kills by Paityn Chapman, while Hayden Kubik finished with 11. Maggie Dostic had a day, logging six aces on the afternoon. That mark ties a program record for aces in a three-set match, tying Caroline Kerr who completed the feat against UT Martin on Aug. 26, 2023.
Gülce Güçtekin helped lead a Tennessee defense that finished with 34 digs and seven blocks. Güçtekin continued her strong start to her Tennessee career with 12 digs. Delaware State were not able to find a rhythm on the offensive side, finishing the contest with just 24 kills while hitting .084.
The Lady Vols took early control in the first set, picking up five unanswered points to get the match started. Delaware State would attempt a comeback in the frame, but a 7-2 run by Tennessee would secure the set. Chapman led the squad early on with five kills in the match. The Lady Vol defense was able to quell the Hornet attack, holding them to 10 kills and a .143 hitting percentage. Tennessee's offense was efficient in the first set, with 15 kills and a .533 hitting percentage.
Tennessee dominated the second stanza, with multiple scoring runs in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Tennessee offense was on point in the second, finishing with 17 kills and a .708 hitting percentage. Güçtekin was important on the defense for the Lady Vols, finishing the set with nine digs. Like in the first set, the Lady Vol defense stifled the Hornets offense, holding them a paltry seven kills and .111 hitting percentage.
The Big Orange opened the final set in dominating fashion, going on a 9-1 run to take an early advantage. Tennessee was able to stave off a late Delaware State attack, as they secured the set and the sweep. Plante was active in the third frame, notching seven kills. Chelsea Sutton had a very productive final set for the Lady Vols, with three kills and four blocks. The defense had another impressive showing in the third set, holding Delaware State to a hitting percentage of zero while having an advantage in kills of 16-7.
