Lady Vols take Singles and Doubles Crowns at ITA National Summer Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Lady Vols claimed both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA National Summer Championships on Tuesday, with Saray Yli-Piipari earning the singles crown, while she and teammate Vanesa Suarez teamed up to win the doubles tournament.

The day began with Yli-Piipari's singles effort, as she faced Notre Dame freshman Sophia Holod. Yli-Piipari opened with a strong 6-2 first set. She started the second set in similarly promising fashion, securing an early break point for a 2-0 lead, but Holod managed to rally to a 7-5 set win. Facing a tiebreaker third set, the Lady Vol stormed to a 9-0 advantage and managed to fend off her opponent, taking the win with a final 6-2, 5-7, 10-4 score.

With her win of the singles tournament, she has earned a wild card bid to the Main Draw of the ITA All-American Championships (Sept. 20-28) in Cary, N.C. The All-American Championships present a chance to earn one of ten available spots in the NCAA Championships singles draw (Nov. 18-23) in Orlando, Fla.

In addition to the ITA bid, she has also been awarded a wild card bid for a USTA 35k pro event.

Following the singles final, she and Suarez faced Northwestern's Loureiro/Jessel duo for the doubles title. The Lady Vols easily handled the Wildcats, 6-1,6-1, in a succinct 31-minute match.

As with the singles champion, their doubles win earned them a main draw bid to the ITA All-American Championships in September.
