March 18, 2025 | Baseball
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A day after earning SEC weekly honors, Marcus Phillips was tabbed the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) National Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the College Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
The junior righthander tossed a seven-inning complete-game shutout last Saturday afternoon to help the top-ranked Vols clinch their series against No. 6/7 Florida on SEC Opening Weekend.
Making his first-career SEC start, Phillips struck out seven, scattered five hits and issued just one walk in a career-high seven innings pitched, topping his previous career-best of 5.2 innings. The South Dakota native's complete-game shutout was the first by a UT pitcher since Drew Beam had one in a win at Vanderbilt on April 3, 2022.Â
Phillips is the second Tennessee player to earn national player or pitcher of the week recognition this year, joining infielder Gavin Kilen, who was named the Golden Spikes Award National Player of the Week on March 3.
Phillips is the first Vol to garner national pitcher of the week honors since Andrew Lindsey did so on May 23, 2023.
Phillips and the Vols host in-state foe ETSU on Tuesday evening before hitting the road to take on No. 10/12 Alabama for a Thursday-Saturday series in Tuscaloosa.
