
#16 Vols Tally Victories Against Elon and Penn

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 16 Tennessee men's tennis team earned two wins in a doubleheader against Elon and Penn on Saturday at Barksdale Stadium.
UT (7-2) defeated Elon (0-2) to open the day in a dominant 4-0 fashion. Later in the day, the Vols took care of business over Penn (5-1) in a 6-1 decision to cap off their multi-victory day.
MATCH 1: Tennessee 4, Elon 0
Tennessee saw its two ranked doubles pairs take home wins to open the day's first match. No. 18 Alex Kotzen and Alejandro Moreno trampled Veljko Krstic and Rafael Ymer, 6-1, while No. 72 Shunsuke Mitsui and Alan Jesudason clinched the doubles point over Oskar Antinheimo and Jack Curtis, 6-3.
James Newton and Ian Cruz were in the midst of action on court three before their match went unfished.
Heading into singles, the Big Orange jumped out to early advantages and never looked back. Cruz was the first to finish his match and extend the lead, defeating Alonso Roca, 6-1, 6-0. No. 29 Kotzen returned to his winning ways on court two against Ymer, 6-3, 6-0. Closing things out in the early portion of the day, No. 14 Mitsui paced to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Krstic.
Jesudason was heading into his third set, and Jose Garcia and Jan Kobierski were each up on their courts before the match ended.
MATCH 2: Tennessee 6, Penn 1
In a similar fashion to earlier in the day, Tennessee was triumphant in the doubles point and was able to gain an early lead moving into singles. No. 18 Kotzen and Moreno got things done on court one, 6-3, against Aaron Sandler and Sanjeev Chundu. Following their triumph, Newton and Kobierski finished with a punctual 7-5 display against Manfredi Graziani and Shaurya Bharadwaj.
No. 72 Mitsui and Jesudason were in the midst of a 6-6 battle before the doubles point was clinched in favor of UT.
Singles played out similarly for the Vols, as they only saw one of their victories go to three sets. Cruz capped off his impressive day with a 6-1, 6-1 domination over Matthew Rutter. Garica then got in on the action, taking down S. Bharadwaj, 6-1, 6-2. Just like the previous match, court one clinched the result, this time with No. 29 Kotzen winning 6-3, 6-4 versus Graziani.
Once the match was clinched, No. 74 Moreno and No. 14 Mitsui each tallied respective victories over Justin Chung and Tal Goodman to give the Big Orange a six-point advantage nearing the end of the match.
The Quakers earned their one victory on court three to close things out via Chundu.
MITSUI IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Adding to his already impressive list of accolades earned this season, senior Shunsuke Mitsui now sits tied for eighth in school history for singles wins in a career (115). He joins legendary VFL Paul Annacone for the statistic and now stands two away from seventh in program history, which is currently held by recent VFL Luca Wiedenmann.
CRUZ CONTROL
With his two singles triumphs on Saturday, Ian Cruz has reached 75 total victories for his career. For the season, he has achieved a 9-7 record, including five wins in dual matches.
