VFL Trey Smith Vying For Rare Super Bowl Three-Peat
February 06, 2025 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Kansas City offensive guard Trey Smith will attempt to achieve something no Tennessee VFL has ever accomplished when his Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX from Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
Smith is vying for a third straight Super Bowl ring in just his fourth year in the NFL. Smith is the fourth former Tennessee player to play in at least three Super Bowls, joining quarterback Peyton Manning (4, Colts/Broncos); linebacker Jack Reynolds (3, 49ers) and defensive back Bill Bates (3, Cowboys). Bates is the only VFL to win three Super Bowls, doing so as a member of the Cowboys in Super Bowls played in 1993, '94 and 96. Â
Kickoff between Kansas City and Philadelphia is 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX.
Smith has put together the best season of his young career, starting all 19 games without allowing a sack in 1,232 offensive snaps. The former two-time All-SEC player was named to his first Pro Bowl after a dominant campaign at right guard.
In January 2020, Smith was one of nine UT students who earned the opportunity to work the Super Bowl. Five years later, Smith has already won two Super Bowls and played in the AFC Championship all four years of his professional career.
"Three years doing it consecutively, you've just seen the process, and there's not really much that different," Smith said earlier this week. "I try to be one of the most physical players on the field. I want to be violent when I play the game."
Entering Super Bowl LIX, a total of 40 different VFLs have combined for 50 Super Bowl rings. That tally is the second most among schools nationally.
