Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Joey Halzle Named Broyles Award Nominee
November 25, 2025 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After guiding a Tennessee offense that ranks fourth in the nation in both scoring and yardage, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle has been tabbed as a nominee for the Broyles Award, presented annually to college football's top assistant coach since 1996.
Faced with the challenge of developing a new quarterback who arrived in the summer, Halzle's unit did not miss a beat, proving to be one of the most dominant offenses in Tennessee history. The group achieved it with eight new starters.
The Volunteers have gone over 400 yards of total offense in all 11 games and are averaging 491.0 yards per game, which is fourth nationally and second in the SEC. Tennessee is putting up 42.3 points per game, which represents the third-highest scoring offense in program history. That mark leads the SEC and is third in the Power Four.
The passing game has thrived under Halzle's tutelage, as Tennessee is tops in the SEC and fourth in the nation with 307.9 yards per game. Halzle mentored newcomer Joey Aguilar, who became the fifth player in UT history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season.
Aguilar leads the SEC in passing yards per game overall (285.9), and he is even better in conference-only games at a league-best 312.6 clip. He's the only player in the SEC averaging over 300 passing yards per game in league-only contests. Aguilar's 160.55 passing efficiency is second in the SEC.
Halzle's offense was stellar against ranked competition, putting up 454.0 yards of total offense and 312.6 yards passing in those games, which was No. 1 in the Power Four.
A native of Oak Park, California, Halzle has been the catalyst for two of the top six individual passing seasons in Tennessee history. His quarterbacks have gone over 3,000 yards of total offense in four of his five seasons on Rocky Top. For perspective, from 1950-2020, Tennessee had a player produce 3,000 yards of total offense in a season only five times.
Hazle is in his third season as the Vols' offensive coordinator and has helped guide the program to another top-20 ranking, a 2024 College Football Playoff berth and the winningest five-year stretch at UT in over two decades.
The Broyles Award selection committee is made of former hall of fame coaches, members of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and legendary broadcasters. The selection committee will vote to advance 15 semifinalists, five finalists and one overall winner.
For the first time in the 30 year history of the Broyles Award, fans across America will have a direct voice in deciding which assistant coaches advance to the semifinalist round, finalist round, and ultimately who wins the award. Fans can cast votes for their favorite nominees at BroylesAward.com/vote. Each individual fan vote counts toward one collective "fan vote" in the official selection process of each round.Â
