Elander Announces Promotion of Josh Reynolds to Assistant Coach
November 20, 2025 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee head baseball coach Josh Elander announced the promotion of Josh Reynolds to assistant coach on Thursday.
"We're excited to announce we have promoted Josh Reynolds to be our new pitching coach here at Tennessee," Elander said. "Josh brings elite development skills, attention to detail and a proven ability to help players reach their highest potential. Our pitching staff is in the best of hands moving forward and we can't wait to continue building upon the investment he has made in our student-athletes."
Reynolds served in a support staff role last season as UT's Director of Pitching Performance after joining the staff in August of 2024 and helped oversee a pitching staff that finished second nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (11.9) sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.17), 14th in ERA (4.06) and 15th in WHIP (1.29).
Tennessee also had five pitchers selected in the 2025 MLB Draft, including a pair of first rounders in Liam Doyle (No. 5 overall) and Marcus Phillips (No. 33 overall).
Reynolds will continue to work closely with the Vols' pitching staff in his new role, filling the position left open by the departure of Frank Anderson, who played an integral role on Tennessee's staff for the past eight seasons (2018-25).
"I want to congratulate Frank Anderson on joining Coach Vitello's staff in San Francisco. They are a perfect match and we wish them nothing but the best at the big-league level," Elander said.
A veteran coach at the Division I level, Reynolds boasts more than 20 years of college and professional baseball experience as a player and a coach.
Before coming to Knoxville, Reynolds was the pitching coach for the University of Cincinnati in 2024, helping the Bearcats post a 32-25 overall record and a 17-13 mark during their first year in the Big 12. It was the program's first 30-win season since 2019, and Cincinnati finished the regular season fifth in the league after being picked to finish in last in the preseason coaches' poll. Under his guidance, UC saw its team ERA drop by nearly a full run in 2024 from the previous year, and posted its lowest single-season ERA (5.89) since 2019.
Prior to his one-year stop at Cincinnati, Reynolds spent seven seasons (2016-22) coaching at Northwestern, where he oversaw the Wildcats' pitching staff and took a lead role in the program's recruiting efforts. He was named Northwestern's interim head coach at the end of the 2021 season and served in that role throughout the 2022 season, as well.
Reynolds also spent time as an assistant coach at Kansas State from 2011 to 2015. During that time, the Wildcats made a pair of NCAA tournament appearances and won the 2013 Big 12 Championship.
Before joining the coaching staff K-State, Reynolds worked as an assistant coach at Evansville for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Early coaching experiences included successful stints as a graduate manager and a volunteer at Kansas State as well as an assistant coach at Northeast Texas Community College.
As a player, Reynolds pitched for Division II powerhouse Central Missouri from 1998 to 2000. He set the UCM record for career wins with 34 in three seasons and helped lead the Mules to Division II College World Series appearances in 1998 and 2000.
Reynolds was selected in the third round of the 2000 MLB Draft by the New York Mets and also spent time in the Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres organizations before transitioning to coaching in 2004.
