General Notes
- Saturday's attendance at Neyland Stadium: 101,915 (sold out)
- Neyland Stadium was sold out for the 25th consecutive contest.
- Tennessee's all-time on-field record fell to 892-420-53 with Saturday's loss (NCAA record: 881-420-53).
- The Vols donned their "Dark Mode" uniforms during Saturday's contest, featuring black helmets, black jerseys and black pants. Tennessee has posted a 4-2 record in the Dark Mode uniform combination under head coach Josh Heupel.
- The contest was Tennessee's first and only home night game of the 2025 season. The Vols fell to 10-2 in home night games during the Heupel era. It was Tennessee's first home night loss since falling to No. 13 Ole Miss on Oct. 16, 2021.Â
- Saturday marked the sixth all-time meeting between the Volunteers and Sooners. Tennessee dropped to 2-4 in the series.
- Head coach Josh Heupel faced his alma mater for the second year in a row. The 2001 OU graduate led the Sooners to their last national championships in 2000Â and the QB was the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
- Tennessee's team captains for Saturday's game: LS Bennett Brady, DL Joshua Josephs, TE Miles Kitselman, LB Jeremiah Telander
- Oklahoma won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. Oklahoma received the opening kickoff and Tennessee defended the south end zone.
- The Volunteers' 393 passing yards marked the most Oklahoma has allowed in a game this season, eclipsing the 315 last week by Ole Miss.
- The Sooners entered the weekend conceding just 155.4 passing yards per contest, the best mark in the SEC and a top-10 ledger in the country.
- Tennessee's 393 passing yards marked its highest total in Dark Mode uniforms, eclipsing the 332 it had against Georgia on Nov. 13, 2021.
- Tennessee has scored in 3:43 or fewer on its opening drive—six touchdowns and two field goals—in eight of nine games this season. The lone outlier was the Oct. 18 contest at Alabama. The eight drives have taken an average of just 2:20 per possession.Â
- The Volunteers scored in 2:14 against Syracuse, in 1:52 versus ETSU, in 2:30 against Georgia, in 2:04 versus UAB, in 2:30 at Mississippi State, in 2:31 against Arkansas, in 1:19 at Arkansas and in 3:43 versus Oklahoma.
- The Volunteers outgained the Sooners by 139 yards, 173-34, in the opening quarter. That included a 139-yard edge, 153-14, in passing yards. In addition, Tennessee recorded 11 first downs in the first session and conceded only two.
- In the first half as a whole, the Volunteers posted a plus-156 margin, 255-99, in total yardage, including a 167-yard cushion, 211-44, in passing yards. It registered 17 first down and allowed just five.
- After recording two against the Sooners, Tennessee now has 12 passing plays of 40-plus yards this season. It tallied 10 total during the 13-game 2024 season.
- Senior QB Joey Aguilar finished Saturday's contest completing 29-of-45 passes for 393 yards and three touchdowns. The completions and attempts both set season highs.
- Aguilar threw for 211 yards in the first half alone. It marked the fourth time this season he amassed 200-plus passing yards before the intermission.
- Aguilar has at least one touchdown pass in all nine games this season and has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 20 consecutive games dating back to his 2024 season opener while playing for App State. Aguilar has thrown for multiple touchdowns in six of nine games as a Vol and 26 of his 33 starts during his FBS career.
- Aguilar has thrown for more than 200 yards in all 33 of his FBS starts, which is the longest active streak in Division I.
- The 393 passing yards by Aguilar were the second-most by a quarterback in the Heupel era, trailing only the 396 he threw for last week at Kentucky.
- Aguilar and Tyler Bray are the only Tennessee quarterbacks to throw for 390-plus yards multiple times this century. Bray achieved the feat on four occasions.
- The last Tennessee quarterback to throw for 390-plus yards in consecutive outings was Bray in November 2012. One came in non-conference play, while the other was in quadruple-overtime.
- Aguilar owns two of the six regulation performances of 390-plus passing yards by a Tennessee quarterback this century.
- Aguilar and Tyler Bray are the only Tennessee quarterbacks to throw for 390-plus yards multiple times this century. Bray achieved the feat on four occasions.
- Aguilar threw for the most yards by a Tennessee player in Dark Mode jerseys. The prior best was 292 by Nico Iamaleava on Nov. 2, 2024, versus Kentucky.
- The previous high in any alternate uniform was 314 by Iamaleava in Smokey Grey against Chattanooga on Aug. 31, 2024.
- Aguilar's three passing touchdowns also tied the most by a Tennessee quarterback in alternate uniforms. It has happened four times previously, including twice in Dark Mode jerseys.
- Redshirt sophomore TE Ethan Davis hauled in a 40-yard catch in the first quarter. It not only marked the longest reception of his career, but gave him a new high for a full game. His prior top mark was 33 yards on two catches versus UConn on Nov. 4, 2023.
- Davis concluded the night with a career-high five catches for 62 yards.
- Redshirt freshman WR Braylon Staley posted his first career multi-touchdown game with two receiving scores on Saturday — a 5-yard grab in the first quarter and a 54-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter.
- Staley's 54-yard, go-ahead score marked his third reception of 50-plus yards this season, including his second for a touchdown.
- The two receiving touchdowns for Staley matched the most by any Tennessee player in an alternate uniform. It has occurred six prior times, with Jalin Hyatt the only one to do in Dark Mode attire when he achieved the feat Oct. 29, 2022, versus Kentucky.
- Tennessee has now posted at least one fumble takeaway in eight of nine games this season, including each of the past seven. The Volunteers have totaled 10 on the year.
- The Volunteers conceded just 159 yards passing on the night, their lowest total of the year. Their prior low was 167 versus ETSU on Sept. 6.
- Tennessee last allowed fewer than 160 yards passing on Nov. 30, 2024, when Vanderbilt had 104.
- Sophomore DB Edrees Farooq forced and recovered a fumble in the red zone in the third quarter. It marked the first recovery and second force of his career.Â
- Farooq then forced another fumble on the next drive, giving him a career-best two in the game.
- In addition, Farooq finished the contest with 10 tackles, breaking the high of nine he set Oct. 11 versus Arkansas.
- Redshirt sophomore DL Tyree Weathersby recorded the first sack of his collegiate career.
- Redshirt freshman LB Edwin Spillman logged his first collegiate interception late in the fourth quarter.
- Redshirt sophomore PK Max Gilbert hit a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 48-yarder in the fourth quarter, with a miss in between. He moved to 12-of-15 on the season and 32-of-41 in his career.
- Gilbert went 3-of-3 on extra points in the contest, improving to 101-of-101 in his career. Just eight other players in SEC history have connected on 100-plus extra points without a miss.
- Redshirt sophomore P Jackson Ross punted two times for 87 yards, registering a long of 46 on the night.
