Lanier Claims Second SEC Player of the Week Recognition

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Chaz Lanier of the University of Tennessee men's basketball team is the SEC Co-Player of the Week, as revealed Monday afternoon by the league office.
A fifth-year guard out of Nashville, Tenn., Lanier shared the accolade with Kentucky's Koby Brea. This is the second such plaudit of the year for Lanier, who also garnered it Nov. 25.
Tennessee has now collected three SEC Player of the Week distinctions this season, including two in a row, as senior guard Zakai Zeigler won the award Dec. 30.
Last week, Lanier averaged 26.5 points per game across a pair of Tennessee wins. He first put up 24 points, two rebounds, two assists, two steals and his first block as a Volunteer in a 67-52 win ove Norfolk State on New Year's Eve.
In the second game of a week, Lanier scored a season-high 29 points, the most by a Volunteer this season, in the team's dominant 76-52 victory Saturday afternoon against No. 23/RV Arkansas at Food City Center. In his first SEC contest, Lanier shot 10-of-20 to tie a season best in makes, went 5-of-9 from 3-point range and hit all four of his free throws.
The 6-foot-5, 207-pounder currently leads the SEC in scoring at 20.3 points per game, a figure that puts him No. 14 in the country. Lanier also paces the league with 4.0 3-point makes per game, the second-best mark nationally.
Thirteen different competitors have combined for 23 total SEC Player of the Week distinctions during head coach Rick Barnes' 10-year tenure. Lanier is the fifth in that group to notch multiple designations, alongside Dalton Knecht (four), Grant Williams (four), Admiral Schofield (three) and Zeigler (two).
Lanier and top-ranked Tennessee (14-0, 1-0 SEC) open their SEC road slate Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they take on eighth-ranked Florida (13-1, 0-1 SEC) at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla., live on ESPN2.
