Halvorsen Makes Successful MLB Debut for Rockies
August 31, 2024 | Baseball
DENVER – Former Tennessee pitcher Seth Halvorsen made his Major League debut on Friday night after being called up by the Colorado Rockies earlier in the day.
Halvorsen pitched one third of an inning, recording the final out of the top of the ninth inning in a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The rookie righthander retired the only batter he faced, getting All-Star Gunnar Henderson to ground out to third base on the first pitch of his at-bat.
Halvorsen is the third VFL to make their MLB debut this season, joining fellow Rockies teammate Jordan Beck and Washington's Trey Lipscomb. He is also the sixth Vol in the Tony Vitello era to make it to The Show, joining Garrett Crochet (2020), Ben Joyce (2023), Andre Lipcius (2023), Lipscomb (2024) and Beck (2024).
In just his second season in professional baseball, Halvorsen has posted a 5-2 record with nine saves and four holds in 41 relief appearances this season between Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque. The hard throwing righthander has racked up 56 strikeouts in 44.1 innings of work and held opposing hitters to a .251 batting average.
Halvorsen was a seventh-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft after spending two years in the Tennessee program. The Minnesota native helped lead the Big Orange to the 2023 Men's College World Series in his final season on Rocky Top, ranking third on the team with 25 appearances to go along with an impressive 1.06 WHIP. Halvorsen went 3-3 with a pair of saves and 52 strikeouts while serving as one of the team's most trusted relievers.
Halvorsen is the fourth player from UT's record-setting 2022 draft class to make it to the majors, joining Beck, Lipscomb and Joyce. That 2022 class featured a program-record 10 individuals selected across the three days of the draft.
Halvorsen is the 48th VFL in program history to make it to the big leagues, and joins Beck (Rockies), Crochet (White Sox) and Joyce (Angels) as current major-leaguers who played at Tennessee.
Colorado will be in nearby Atlanta to open a three-game series against the Braves starting Tuesday, July 3 at 7:20 p.m. ET.
