ST. CATHARINES, Ontario, Canada – Two current members of the Tennessee rowing team earned a silver medal while racing at the 2024 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Canada last week.
Junior Hannah Smith and Team USA secured silver in the U23 Women's Eight event, while senior Alice Fahey of Team New Zealand took silver in the U23 Women's Four competition.
Fahey was slotted in the stroke seat as the Kiwis crossed the line in 6:23.30 in the Women's Four Final A to finish just over three seconds ahead of third-place Australia and only one second behind the gold medalists from Great Britain.
Friday also saw Smith—seated in the bow—help the Americans edge out Germany at the line, crossing in 6:08.35 to capture the silver medal in the Women's Eight final.
Recent Tennessee graduate Sarah Abrams of Team Australia placed fourth in the Women's Eight final Friday, with sophomore Giorgia Borriello and Team Italy placing sixth in the event.
Junior Alex Pidgeon returned to her homeland and raced for Team Canada in the Women's Eight event at the World Championships.
In the U19 World Rowing Championships, incoming Tennessee freshman Jade Bliss raced in the 3-seat for Team Australia in the Women's Quadruple Sculls event during the week. The Aussies reached the A Final, placing sixth.
Friday also marked a significant milestone for the Lady Vols, as it was announced that Tennessee rowing will join the SEC in the upcoming 2024-25 season, after rowing was approved by the SEC athletics directors as the 22nd sport to be sponsored by the conference.
