Five Lady Vols Earn CRCA All-America Honors Following Historic Season
June 07, 2024 | Rowing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Following a historic season for the Tennessee rowing team, four rowers and one coxswain earned spots on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2024 Division I Pocock All-America Team, as announced by the organization Friday.
Â
Rowers Meg Flanagan, Sarah Abrams, Alice Fahey and coxswain Sasha Radovanovic each achieved First Team All-America status, with Emma Seawright earning All-America Second Team honors.
Â
For Fahey, it serves as the second All-America recognition of her career, having also been named to the CRCA's First Team in 2023 while at SMU.
Â
The CRCA announced 20 rowers and three coxswains as First Team All-Americans, with 20 rowers and 3 coxswains also being selected to the All-America Second Team. In addition, 10 rowers and one coxswain nationally earned an All-America Honorable Mention.
Â
Prior to tallying a quartet of First Team All-Americans in 2024, Tennessee's most recent First Team All-America selection was Chelsea Pemberton 20 years ago, in 2004. Pemberton (2004) and Kaitlin Bargreen (2003) were the only two previous CRCA First Team All-Americans in program history. Prior to the CRCA's existence, former Lady Vol Amy Delashmit earned USRowing First Team All-American status in 1997.
Â
In all, Tennessee had recorded just three First Team All-America honors of any kind prior to 2024.
Â
Five All-America honors are Tennessee's most in a single campaign. Its previous best mark was during a three-year run of two All-Americans in 2003, 2004 and again in 2005.
Â
Prior to 2024's five All-Americans, finding the fifth most recent All-American for the Lady Vols would take going back to 2007.
Â
Overall, Tennessee's five 2024 All-America selections mark such honors Nos. 14-18 for the program all-time. In addition, it serves as the ninth, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th individuals to ever earn All-America honors for the Lady Vols.
Â
Flanagan, Abrams, Radovanovic and Seawright each raced solely in Tennessee's 1v8+ boat this spring. Fahey primarily raced with the First Eight crew, spending one race—at the Big 12 Championships—in the 2V8+.
Â
Tennessee's 1V8+ crew accounted for a stellar 44-4 boat record this season. Fahey also logged a 44-4 overall boat record—38-3 in the First Eight and 6-1 in the 2V8+.
Â
The Lady Vol First Eight crew won all three of its races at the Big Ten Invitational in April, as Tennessee won 14 of 15 races at the event on the same course where UT would later compete at the NCAA Championships. On day one, Tennessee's 1V8+ crossed the line in 6:25.802, nearly 15 seconds ahead of No. 12 Ohio State.
Â
At the Lake Wheeler Invitational, Tennessee's 1V8+ put down each of the two fastest times in the event's field, as the Lady Vols swept each of its 15 races to earn the Pocock Lake Wheeler Invitational Cup.
Â
The Big 12 Championships saw Tennessee's 1V8+ take second place. The crew's time of 6:15.334 marked the fastest by Tennessee's 1V8+ crew in any of its nine Big 12 Championships.
Â
Fahey, in the 2V8+ boat only for the Big 12 Championships, helped the crew earn a second-place finish with a final time of 6:10.993. That Tennessee mark is the fastest by a Lady Vol second varsity eight boat in Big 12 Championship history.
Â
Entering the NCAA Championships, Tennessee's First Eight crew earned the No. 4 overall national seed. Eventually advancing to the NCAA Championships Grand Final, the Lady Vol 1V8+ crew posted an impressive third-place national finish, the best in program history.
Â
Tennessee (6:12.156) crossed the line just 2.236 seconds behind first-place, top-ranked Texas (6:09.920). Furthermore, a mere .352 seconds separated Tennessee from second-place, No. 2 Stanford (6:11.804). UT finished ahead of No. 4 Princeton, eighth-ranked Brown and No. 7 Washington in the race.
Â
After logging 118 points at the 2024 NCAA Championships, Tennessee's third-place finish as a team stands as the program's best-ever overall team finish in the postseason event.
