#5 Lady Vols Earn Five Medals, Place Second at Big 12 Championships
May 19, 2024 | Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Tennessee rowing team posted a second-place finish Sunday at the Big 12 Championships in Sarasota, Florida.
Â
It tied Tennessee's best-ever finish at the Big 12 Championships, also having finished second in 2023. The day also marked the second time Tennessee has medaled in each race at the event. Further, 2024 is the first time UT has gone five-for-five on medals, as when it medaled in each race in 2021 it did not have a third varsity eight crew compete.
Â
Following the day's action at Nathan Benderson Park, five Lady Vols were selected to the All-Big 12 Team, as Sarah Abrams, Alice Fahey, Meg Flanagan, Sasha Radovanovic and Emma Seawright earned the recognition. For Seawright, it is her fourth consecutive season earning the honor.
Â
In the Lady Vols' ninth year competing at the event, Tennessee's 1V8+, 2V8+, 1V4+, 2V4+ and 3V8+ crews each put down the program's fastest-ever Big 12 Championship times Sunday, respective to boat classifications.
Â
In the first varsity eight race, the Lady Vols—Sasha Radovanovic (coxswain), Katie Rice, Megan Hewison, Meg Flanagan, Alex Pidgeon, Nicole Campbell, Emma Seawright, Sarah Abrams and Hannah Smith—earned second place with a time of 6:15.334. That time is the fastest by Tennessee's 1V8+ crew in any of its nine Big 12 Championships (it joined the conference for the 2015 spring), surpassing the previous best time—set in 2023—by 15.669 seconds. The Lady Vols crossed the line 12.986 seconds ahead of 19th-ranked Alabama, while No. 1 Texas placed first in the race.
Â
The 2V8+ race saw Tennessee's crew, made up of Elizabeth Walley (coxswain), Sophie Hill, Alice Fahey, Stella Mirkovic, Paige Reymann, Riley Ferdelman, Gracie Condon, Hannah Richardson and Erin Gifford, place second with a final time of 6:10.993, behind only Texas (6:08.884). That Tennessee mark is the fastest by a Lady Vol second varsity eight boat in Big 12 Championship history. UT crossed the line 15.086 seconds ahead of third-place UCF.
Â
Tennessee's 1V4+ crew, comprised of Laila Irigoyen (coxswain), Natalia Loram, Sheya Lavin, Allison Lea and Maylie Valiquette, also set a program-best Big 12 Championship time. The Lady Vol first varsity four posted a time of 6:56.414—the best 1V4+ mark in Tennessee's nine Big 12 Championship appearances. That final time was good for second place and was over nine seconds ahead of third-place, No. 19 Alabama.
Â
The Lady Vols placed second in the second varsity four race, logging a time of 7:05.406. Texas (7:00.790) picked up the win in that race, with Tennessee finishing 17.681 seconds ahead of third-place Alabama.
Â
In the 3V8+ race, UT (6:35.268) crossed the line in second place, as Texas placed first with a time of (6:29.146).
Â
Up next, the NCAA Championships will take place on May 31-June 2 in Bethel, Ohio. The NCAA selection show airs Tuesday, May 21 on NCAA.com at 5 p.m. ET.
