#5 Tennessee Wins Each of Its 10 Races on Day One of Lake Wheeler Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Tennessee rowing team was the class of the field Friday at the Lake Wheeler Invitational, as UT won all 10 races in which it had a boat competing in and Lady Vol boats were responsible for each of the top-three fastest times on the event's opening day, which consisted of rounds one and two.

In the morning session, Tennessee's 1V8+ crew—Sasha Radovanovic (coxswain), Meg Flanagan, Hannah Smith, Sarah Abrams, Alex Pidgeon, Riley Ferdelman, Alice Fahey, Hannah Richardson and Emma Seawright—put down the fastest time of any boat in the field Friday with an impressive final time of 6:23.438 on the way to its first of two race victories on the day.

No. 11 Pennsylvania clocked a time of 6:28.524, while 10th-ranked Syracuse (6:30.235)Â placed third and No. 18 Washington State (6:41.884) finished in fourth, crossing the line 18.446 seconds after Tennessee. Boston placed fifth and Georgetown (7:01.278) was a distant 37.840 back of the Lady Vols, finished sixth.

The second-fastest time of the day among all boat classifications was recorded by Tennessee's second varsity eight crew in round one, clocking a time of 6:37.341. The boat featured Elizabeth Walley (coxswain), Sophie Hill, Megan Hewison, Stella Mirkovic, Paige Reymann, Nicole Campbell, Gracie Condon, Katie Rice and Erin Gifford. That finish was 8.857 seconds faster than second-place, Syracuse's time of 6:46.198. The Pennsylvania crew placed third with a final time of 6:51.272, while Washington State (7:07.303) finished fifth, 29.962 seconds off UT's winning pace.

Even with stronger headwinds in the afternoon, the third-fastest time of day one at Lake Wheeler was posted by Tennessee's 1V8+ crew in round two. With a time of 6:40.718, UT's crew outpaced Syracuse (6:48.152) by 7.434 seconds. Third-place Miami (7:03.210) was 22.492 seconds back of the Lady Vols.

The morning round also saw Tennessee's 1V4+ crew—Laila Irigoyen (coxswain), Maylie Valiquette, Allison Lea, Sheya Lavin and Natalia Loram—put down a time of 7:30.541 to collect the win, outpacing Pennsylvania (7:41.129), Syracuse (7:44.107) and Washington State (7:55.589). Sixth-place Georgetown (8:06.964) crossed the line 36.423 seconds after Tennessee.

In round one's second varsity four race Friday morning, Tennessee's crew—Audrey Bast (coxswain), Abby Fowler, Beatrice Bernard, Channing Taner and Logan Yates—registered a final time of 7:36.468, defeating a trio of ranked foes in the process. Syracuse (7:44.554) placed second, while Washington State (8:06.154) crossed 29.686 seconds behind Tennessee. Pennsylvania (8:15.120) finished the race 38.652 seconds after the Lady Vols.Â

UT's 3V8+ crew-- Mykayla Fluster (coxswain), Lili Binetti, Paris Thornburg, Kiana Worobey, Casey Chronister, Maiya Birdling, Tiara Dye, Evelyn Hedrick, Alyssa Biernat—also logged a win in Friday's first round, crossing in 7:13.210 to best Syracuse (7:16.724), Pennsylvania (7:19.846) and Georgetown (7:57.272). UT's winning time was the fastest among all 3V8+ crews in round one.

Tennessee's dominance continued in round two. Its 2V8+ crew recorded a time of 6:46.693. That mark was 11.156 faster than second-place Syracuse and 42.344 seconds faster than sixth-place Boston College.

Also in the afternoon session, Tennessee's first varsity four left no doubt as its time of 7:32.591 was a whopping 18.576 seconds faster than that of Syracuse and approached being a minute faster (52.886 seconds) than Boston College.

Round two's 2V4+ race also resulted in a Lady Vol victory, with UT's 7:44.008 final time besting Syracuse (7:48.416) by over four seconds. In Tennessee's third varsity eight race of the day, its crew collected the win with a four-plus second cushion on Syracuse.
Tennessee wraps up the Lake Wheeler Invitational Saturday morning, with its first race beginning at 9:10 a.m. ET.
