KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Nolan Harvath, who served as a member of the West Virginia University strength and conditioning staff since December of 2020, has been hired as director of women's basketball sports performance at Tennessee.
"I have had the pleasure of working with Nolan in the past, and he knows what we are trying to accomplish," Lady Vol head basketball coach Kim Caldwell said. "He sees the vision we have and is dedicated to making sure we are the hardest working team in the country. I know he is going to show up to work focused on ensuring our program is getting better every single day."
An assistant strength and conditioning coach at WVU, Harvath (pronounced HARR-vath) worked with Mountaineer football since spring 2022. He originally arrived in Morgantown in December 2020 after being hired to assist the Mountaineer baseball and golf programs.
Harvath came to WVU after a three-year stint as the director of strength and conditioning at Glenville State University from 2018-20. He also was assistant athletic director at GSU from 2019-20, working there while Caldwell was leading the Pioneer women's basketball program.
At Glenville State, Harvath was responsible for all strength and conditioning activities within the athletic department, including program design and implementation. Additionally, he oversaw all strength, speed, power and ability testing, as well as budgeting and fundraising activities related to strength and conditioning.
Prior to his time in Glenville, Harvath was a strength and conditioning intern at WVU, working primarily with the football team. He assisted during team lifts and runs and was responsible for setting up and breaking down all team strength and conditioning activities.
Harvath also served as a consultant for the University of Charleston baseball team from 2016-20, designing all strength and conditioning programs for the team. He also tracked, monitored and assessed all data obtained from each macrocycle.
In the West Virginia prep ranks, Harvath spent time as a strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater, East Fairmont High (2016-17), and Morgantown High (2013-15). In 2013, Harvath was given the opportunity to be the graduate assistant head strength and conditioning coach at MHS while pursuing his master's degree. He was responsible for all strength and conditioning activities, including program design and implementation for football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, track and cross country, wrestling and volleyball.
Harvath also was responsible for overseeing the strength and conditioning internship program at Morgantown High School in conjunction with West Virginia University. He oversaw all fundraising activities for the strength and conditioning program, and all strength, speed, power and agility testing.
A native of Fairmont, W.Va., Harvath graduated from the University of Southern Indiana in 2013 with a degree in exercise science before earning his master's in athletic coaching education with emphasis in human performance from WVU in 2016. While attending USI, he was a four-year member of the men's soccer program and was a two-year captain as well as three-time academic all-conference honoree.
He began his strength and conditioning career during his senior year at USI at the Sports Acceleration Center located in Evansville, Indiana. The primary training focus of the Center is on the development of an athlete's speed and power potential.
Harvath also worked in the private sector of strength and conditioning at Pro Performance in Morgantown. While at Pro Performance, Harvath was able to expand his training knowledge and philosophy by working with a wide variety of sports and skill levels. He is a National Strength and Conditioning Association certified strength and conditioning coach and is a certified physical preparation specialist.
Harvath and his fiancé, Jeri, reside in Knoxville.
