Freshman Duo Clocks Impressive 10k Marks At Penn Relays
April 25, 2024 | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA – A pair of Tennessee freshman distance runners kicked off the weekend with two impressive times in the College Women's 10,000-meter championship on Thursday night at the Penn Relays. Caroline Lyerly completed the 25-lapper in a personal-best 33:19.80 to finish fourth at the meet, while Jillian Candelino turned in a time of 33:30.94 to place fifth in her collegiate track debut.
Lyerly's time shattered her own UT freshman record in the event by nearly 45 seconds and ranks No. 2 on Tennessee's all-time list in the event. Candelino marked the program's top 10 as well, becoming the No. 4 performer in Lady Vol history in the women's 10,000-meter run.
Combined with Emily Covert (33:34.94), Ashley Jones (33:34.96) and Rachel Sutliff (33:34.97), the Lady Vol distance squad boasts five runners below 33:35 for the 10k this season. That total ranks second behind NC State's six athletes below that threshold.
UP NEXT: Tennessee's final weekend of the regular outdoor season continues Friday with 13 distance athletes competing at the App State Open (Boone, N.C.) and Alyssa Raymond competing in the long jump at the Clark Wood Invitational (Louisville, Ky.).
