April 26, 2024 | Track & Field
BOONE, N.C. – Lady Vol track & field rookie Jessie Secor took down the program's 47-year-old freshman record in the outdoor mile on Friday night at the App State Open, turning in a winning time of 4:49.52 in her first attached mile as a collegiate athlete.
The Louisville, Kentucky, native outperformed the previous UT rookie standard of 4:55.1 set by Brenda Webb in 1977. Secor's mark was the second UT freshman record set in as many days. Caroline Lyerly improved her own rookie standard in the women's 10,000-meter with a mark of 33:19.80 on Thursday at the Penn Relays.
On the men's side, Tennessee packed a 1-2 punch with Christopher Cherry (4:02.26) and Canaan Anderson (4:03.16) taking the top two spots in the mile. In the men's invitational 3,000-meter steeplechase, freshman Brody Chapman placed first overall with a lifetime-best mark of 9:05.71, securing his second victory of the season.
UP NEXT: Tennessee track & field's final weekend of the outdoor regular season concludes Saturday with three meets on the docket. The distance crew will close out the App State Open in the women's 5k and men's 800-meter, while four pole vaulters and one horizontal jumper are set for action in the Clark Wood Invitational at Louisville. UT's sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers will cap the weekend at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, concluding with the men's 4x400-meter relay at approximately 1 a.m. ET Sunday.
