Ducos Meets 400-Meter Hurdles Olympic Standard At Tom Jones Memorial
April 12, 2024 | Track & Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tennessee graduate student Clement Ducos cleared a metaphorical hurdle while competing in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday evening at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, obliterating his lifetime-best with a time of 48.26 seconds. His mark took down a 42-year-old school record and was well below the Olympic standard of 48.70 for the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Ducos dethroned former Vol David Patrick as the fastest 400-meter hurdler in program history, topping the previous school record of 48.44 that had stood since 1982. The current Vol standout from Bordeaux, France, set the fastest time by a European this year and the No. 2 mark in the world while becoming the No. 5 French performer all-time.
On the women's side, Lady Vol senior Kyla Robinson-Hubbard opened up in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best clocking of 55.98 to place third at the meet. The Calabasas, California, native rose to No. 4 on Tennessee's all-time list and ranks fourth in the NCAA this season.
Tennessee saw a quartet of season-best marks in the women's and men's 200-meter invitationals in Gainesville, beginning with Lady Vol grad student Dennisha Page turning in a lifetime-best 22.70 into a -1.8 m/s headwind for sixth place overall. The Camden, New Jersey, native now ranks No. 6 on the program charts in the outdoor 200-meter. Lady Vol senior Brianna White also dipped under 23 seconds for the first time in her career with a mark of 22.91, aided by a wind reading of +3.5 m/s, to finish 11th at the meet.
The men's 200-meter tandem of T'Mars McCallum and Javonte' Harding each clocked season-best performances for the Vols, including a PR for McCallum with his time of 20.60 (+0.9 m/s) to win his heat and place 12th overall. Harding posted a time of 20.62 (+1.8 m/s) to finish fourth in his heat and 13th overall at Florida's Percy Beard Track.
A pair of freshman field athletes logged top-8 finishes for the Vols on Friday, beginning with rookie thrower Kevin Burr Jr. placing eighth with a heave of 64.72 meters (212-4) in the men's javelin. Maryville native Grant Campbell capped the evening with an eighth-place outing after he cleared 2.08 meters (6-9.75) in the invite section of the men's high jump.
