ATHENS, Ga. – With big goals coming into the meet, the Tennessee Lady Vols did not disappoint on the first night of the 2024 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at Gabrielson Natatorium, placing inside the top five in both of its events.
Â
In the second and final race of the opening night, Tennessee made history in the 800 free relay by shattering the program record with a time of 6:50.82 and earning the best finish ever in the event, placing No. 2 overall. The squad of Brooklyn Douthwright, Camille Spink, Julia Mrozinski and Josephine Fuller battled the entire race and came out on top of a three-way fight for second that was separated by half a second going into the final 50 split.
Â
Three of UT's four swimmers went under 1:43.00 with their splits. Douthwright led things off with a 1:42.45—just 0.04 seconds off her lifetime best. Spink followed it up with a 1:42.08 split, which was the fourth-fastest time overall in the event. Mrozinski went 1:43.81 in the three spot, and Fuller brought the relay home with a 1:42.48 anchor to secure second place.
Â
Kicking off the meet, the Big Orange threw down the third-best time in program history in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:34.64 to place fifth overall. The lineup of Fuller, Mona McSharry, Sara Stotler and Amber Myers improved their seeding by three spots and earned All-America First Team honors in the event for the first time since 2021. It was UT's highest finish in the race since winning the 200 medley relay in 2019.
Â
McSharry tied the fastest 50 breast split, touching the wall in 25.68. She owns the top time nationally in the 100 breast and ranks No. 2 overall in the 200 breast entering the meet.
