VFLs Jauan Jennings, Trey Smith One Win Away From Super Bowl LVIII Ring
February 07, 2024 | Football
LAS VEGAS – Tennessee football VFLs and former teammates Jauan Jennings and Trey Smith will take the field Sunday seeking a championship ring as the San Francisco 49ers square off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII from Allegiant Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
Jennings and Smith represent the 105th and 106th all-time Super Bowl appearances by Volunteers. That tally ranks ninth among all programs nationally. A total of 40 different VFLs have combined to claim 49 Super Bowl rings. Jennings is seeking his first, while Smith is vying for a second consecutive world championship.
A VFL is guaranteed to win a Super Bowl ring for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
Jennings and Smith were teammates on the same UT offense from 2017-18. For Jennings, Sunday culminates the best year of his young pro career. The San Francisco wide receiver has caught six passes for 69 yards in the playoffs, which followed up a regular season that included 19 catches for 265 yards. He is 37 yards shy of hitting the 1,000-yard mark for his career in now his third active season.
Smith is attempting to achieve the rare feat of winning multiple Super Bowl rings as a VFL. He is no stranger to this stage after playing every offensive snap and not allowing a sack in last year's Super Bowl victory over Philadelphia. In last weekend's AFC Championship win over Baltimore, Smith played all 80 snaps at right guard and did not allow a sack or quarterback hit.
Smith has started every game and played 1,404 offensive snaps at right guard for the Chiefs for the entire season.
