Vols Check in at Sixth in National Polls
February 05, 2024 | Men's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's basketball team is ranked sixth in the country in both major polls this week.
Tennessee (16-5, 6-2 SEC) placed sixth in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, as announced Monday afternoon.
The Volunteers have now been listed in 52 straight AP Polls, the third-longest streak in the nation behind only Houston (78) and Kansas (57). That mark is also 15 weeks longer than the previous program record of 37. Tennessee has garnered a top-10 spot in 25 of those 52 weeks.
This is the eighth week in a row the Volunteers are in the top 10, now solely the sixth-longest streak in program history. Half of those six occurrences have come during ninth-year head coach Rick Barnes' tenure, all since the 2018-19 season. Additionally, Barnes has now guided Tennessee to 50 top-10 rankings, good for 34.7 percent of its all-time total.
Last week, despite 31 points from fifth-year guard Dalton Knecht, Tennessee dropped a 63-59 decision Tuesday at Food City Center to a South Carolina team that is now in the top 20 of both polls. However, it rebounded with a 103-92 victory Saturday at then-No. 10/8 Kentucky behind 26 points apiece from fifth-year guard Josiah-Jordan James and junior guard Zakai Zeigler, the latter of whom added a career-best 13 assists.
The Volunteers claimed 1,211 points in the AP Poll balloting, just 62 shy of fifth-place Houston. In the Coaches Poll, they earned 647 points, only 11 fewer than last week and merely 15 behind the Cougars.
Tennessee is once again the highest-ranked team in the SEC, which now has five of its members in the top 20 of each poll. Along with the Volunteers, Auburn is No. 12/11, South Carolina is No. 15/20, Alabama is No. 16 and Kentucky is No. 17/15. In addition, Ole Miss received votes from both voting bodies.
The Volunteers are back on the Food City Center floor Wednesday at 7 p.m. against LSU, live on SEC Network.
