Darby Repeats SEC Community Service Team Honors
February 29, 2024 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ‐- In a continuing effort to recognize the accomplishments of student‐athletes beyond the field of competition, the SEC once again has highlighted a Community Service Team for women's basketball for the 2023‐24 season. Tennessee senior Tess Darby has been named as a member of that squad for the second straight year.
This marks the 26th year for the SEC Community Service Team for women's basketball as well as for men's basketball. All league‐sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at‐large teams for men's and women's sports being chosen from 1999‐2003. The SEC began the concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994.
A native of Greenfield, Tenn., Darby graduated from UT with a degree in finance in the summer of 2023 and is pursuing a master's in agricultural leadership, education and communications. She also is a 2021-22 graduate of the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center's 2021-22 VOLeaders Academy.
Darby has posted 84 hours of work in various communities through VOLoween, a VOLeaders service trip to Rwanda, virtual reading to children and the annual Hoops For Hope event with the Down Syndrome Awareness Group of East Tennessee. She also visited the East Tennessee Children's Hospital, Lonsdale Elementary P.E. class, the Love Kitchen and Young-Williams Animal Center to share her time with those organizations.
Darby also helped restock supplies at the Big Orange Pantry, offered support at the Reach for the Summitt 5K and Weigel's Christmas, and lent a hand with the Women's Basketball Angel Tree, Operation Christmas Child and Salvation Army Forget Me Not adopted Christmas family. Additionally, she aided the Paris-Henry County Industrial Committee and put on the Darby 2 Darby Basketball Clinic with her sister, Edie.
A 6-foot-1 guard/forward, Darby is averaging 5.2 points and 3.1 rebounds this season, ranking second on the team with 37 three-pointers made and standing third in steals with 16. One of five Lady Vols to appear in every game this season, she has scored in double figures twice and had a career-best 18 points with six three-pointers made vs. Liberty on Dec. 31.
Darby ranks among the top 10 in several categories within the UT women's basketball record book, including No. 6 in career three-pointers made (163), No. 8 in career three-pointers attempted (432), No. 9 in single-season three-pointers (70, 2022-23) and No. 9 in career three-point field goal percentage (37.7).
