#5/9 Vols Fall in Extras to Oklahoma, 5-1
February 17, 2024 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – After a hard-fought, low-scoring battle, No. 5/9 Tennessee fell in extra innings to Oklahoma, 5-1, on Saturday night in the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field.
The Sooners broke a 1-1 tie with four runs on two walks and three hits, including a pair of two-out RBI knocks, in the top of the 10th inning to pull out the victory.
UT got phenomenal pitching and defense prior to extras as Drew Beam, Marcus Phillips, Chris Stamos and Aaron Combs held Oklahoma to a single run on seven hits through nine frames.
Beam got the start and posted a typical solid performance, going 5.2 innings while allowing just one run on seven hits and no walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts in a no-decision.
Despite an overall solid performance out of the bullpen, Combs was stuck with the loss after being charged with three runs in the 10th inning following back-to-back walks and a double allowed.
Dylan Dreiling, Hunter Ensley and Christian Moore all had multiple hits for the Vols, but the Big Orange were unable to find the big hits when they needed them, leaving 11 runners on base for the game.
Dreiling drove in Tennessee's lone run with a no-doubt solo home run that traveled 441 feet over the bullpen in right center to tie the game at one in the fourth inning. The Hays, Kansas, native also added a double in the sixth inning for his third hit of the weekend.
The Sooners' pitching trio of Brendan Girton, Kyson Witherspoon and Ryan Lambert were able to keep UT's hitters off balance throughout the game, combining for 15 strikeouts in 10 innings. Lambert picked up the win after tossing the final 1.2 innings.
John Spikerman, Easton Carmichael and Rocco Garza-Gongora combined for seven of OU's 10 hits and drove in all five runs on the night.
UP NEXT: The Vols (1-1) will look to bounce back and finish the weekend on a high note Sunday night when they take on Baylor (0-2) in the final game of the 2024 Shriners Children's College Classic at 7:30 p.m. ET.
STAT OF THE GAME: With Oklahoma threatening after drawing back-to-back walks to start the top of the seventh inning, pitcher Chris Stamos and shortstop Christian Moore combined to turn UT's first triple play since Feb. 22, 1997, against Eastern Kentucky.
