Revisiting the 2023 SEC Championships
- Tennessee had very successful performances from both the Vols and Lady Vols at the 2023 SEC Championships. The Big Orange won a combined 26 medals, with nine gold, 12 silver, and five bronze. Both squads earned top-three finishes as well, and Tennessee was one of two schools to have both squads finish in the top five teams at the SEC Championships.Â
- On the men's side, Jordan Crooks and Bryden Hattie were named co-winners of the SEC Commissioner's Trophy for their impressive outings. Crooks became the first Vol to earn SEC Swimmer of the Meet honors, while Hattie became the third Vol to win SEC Diver of the Meet. Crooks broke a pair of SEC meet records and pool records while taking home seven medals in total. Hattie took home two gold medals on platform and 3-meter. The Vols brought home 12 medals (6 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze), placing third with 1035.5 points.Â
- On the women's side, they earned individual victories from Mona McSharry and Brooklyn Douthwright. The Lady Vols had eight different individuals reach an A final, with six of them advancing in multiple events. Six of the eight A finalists went on to win medals as well. In total, the women earned 14 medals (3 gold, 8 silver, 3 bronze) to finish second overall with 1035.5 points.Â
Vols, Lady Vols Enter as SEC Leaders in 6 Events
- Defending NCAA Champion and SEC Swimmer of the Year Jordan Crooks enters the Championships boasting the top time in the 50 free. The junior's top mark this season in the event is 18.40, which also is the best in the nation. In addition, Crooks holds the second-fastest time in the SEC in the 100 free and is third in the 100 fly and 200 free.Â
- Last year's SEC Diver of the Year and SEC Champion Bryden Hattie enters the conference championships with the top score on Platform. The senior also sits at fourth on 3-meter, an event he also won last year at SECs.
- Entering as the leader in the 100 and 200 breast, Mona McSharry is looking to earn her third-consecutive SEC crown in the 100 breast and second straight in the 200 breast.
- Two UT swimmers at the top of the SEC leaderboard are seeking their first conference gold. Sophomore Martin Espernberger heads to Auburn with the top time in the 200 fly. Appearing at her first SEC Championships, freshman Camille Spink comes into the meet with the top mark in the 100 free.        Â
- UT boasts 77 total SEC medals across the roster, which ranks first in the conference by 16.Â
- With SEC Swimmer of the Year Jordan Crooks and SEC Diver of the Year Bryden Hattie returning to Rocky Top this season, Tennessee is the first school to return the SOTY and DOTY to the same roster since the award's inception.
- Nick Stone joins the pair with an SEC yearly honor of his own, as he took home Freshman Diver of the Year last season.
- In addition, five UT athletes own individual SEC Championships in their career, and four are looking to defend their crown this season.
- While projections are solely based off top times from the season and many factors could be taken into consideration with medaling, the Lady Vols entered the 2023 SEC Championships projected to boast eight medalists. Instead, they finished with 14 medals. The Vols projection was correct, with 12 projected and 12 won.
- This year, the Vols are projected to boast 12 medalists once again, while the Lady Vols project to secure seven medals.
- With 89 projected finalists between both squads, the Vols and Lady Vols are primed for another big performance at SECs.
- Even if every athlete finished last in their projected final, both squads would still be among the top half of the standings.
- Every UT relay squad is slated for a top-5 finish, with eight in position to medal.
- Jordan Crooks (3), Bryden Hattie (2), Gui Caribe (2) and Joey Tepper (2) are the Vols slated to compete in multiple A Finals.
- For the Lady Vols, Josephine Fuller (3), Mona McSharry (3), Camille Spink (3), Brooklyn Douthwright (2), Emelie Fast (2) and Sara Stotler (2) all boast A final times this season.
- Nine Lady Vols are expected to compete in at least one A Final.Â
- A Finalists - Vols (19), Lady Vols (21) = 40
- B Finalists - Vols (13), Lady Vols (10) = 23
- C Finalists - Vols (18), Lady Vols (8) = 26
- Total Finalists - Vols (50), Lady Vols (39) = 89
