BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee freshman Kaniya Boyd has been named Southeastern Conference Women's Basketball Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Boyd, a 5-foot-9 guard from Las Vegas, enjoyed the finest performance of her career by far on Sunday vs. Winthrop. She fired in a career-best 15 points on 5-of-5 accuracy from the field and matched career highs with four assists and three rebounds, as the No. 15/13 Lady Vols improved to 12-0 for the first time since 2017-18 and the seventh time in school history.
She started her day with a three-pointer that helped propel the Lady Vols to a game-opening 11-0 run and never missed an attempt from the field. She ended up four of five from the free-throw line, improving her percentage on the season to 82.4 percent and contributing to a UT offensive attack that eclipsed 100 points for the sixth time in 12 games in a 114-50 win over the Eagles.
Boyd's previous scoring high was six points, coming vs. Richmond on Dec. 20 and also earlier vs. UT Martin in game two on Nov. 7. Her five field goals were more than the four total she amassed in her past five games, and her 15 points were more than the 11 combined over the past six contests.
With her performance, the rookie has elevated her averages to 4.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.6 steals, which are the highest of the season.
Boyd and her teammates will open SEC play on Thursday night, as they travel to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies at 7 p.m. CT (8 ET) in a contest broadcast on SECN+ and the Lady Vol Radio Network.
