Cooper Named TSWA Player Of The Week
December 10, 2024 | Women's Basketball
Tennessee guard Talaysia Cooper was announced Tuesday afternoon as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Cooper extended her personal streak of scoring 20-plus points to four games, averaging 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals while shooting 51.3 percent from the field last week as the undefeated Lady Volunteers took down RV/RV Florida State and #17/20 Iowa to move to 7-0 on the season.
On Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a national television audience looking on, Cooper overcame first-half foul trouble to fire in 19 of her 23 points over the final 20 minutes to help Kim Caldwell's squad secure a signature win over the Hawkeyes, 78-68, in the Shark Beauty Women's Champions Classic. The 6-0 redshirt sophomore from Turbeville, S.C., scored 10 of her points in the fourth quarter on 5-of-9 shooting with all 10 coming in the final 4:26, as she helped the Big Orange overcome a four-point deficit by contributing significantly toward a 16-2 game-closing run.
Cooper, who played just shy of five minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, finished 10 of 22 from the field vs. Iowa, leading her team in scoring as well as in rebounds (6), assists (3) and blocks (3) while adding two steals. She improved her season averages to 20.1 ppg., 6.1 rpg., 3.7 apg., 2.9 spg. and 1.1 bpg. and is shooting 55.7 percent from the field and 84.2 percent from the free-throw line.
On Wednesday night in Knoxville, Cooper connected on 10 of 17 field goal tries to tally 22 points, as UT turned back a ferocious FSU comeback to end the Seminoles' seven-game winning streak and hand them only their second loss of the season. Cooper, who was six of seven for 12 points in the decisive final frame, also contributed team highs of seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals as well as three assists to her final stat line.
Cooper has tallied 33, 20, 22 and 23 points over her last four games and had 18 and 19 in two other contests. She leads Tennessee in points (141), steals (20) and blocks (8) and ranks second in rebounds (43) and assists (26).
The Lady Vols return to action with a weekend matinee, as North Carolina Central comes to town for a 2 p.m. ET contest on Saturday. The game will be streamed on SECN+ and broadcast on Lady Vol Network radio stations statewide and worldwide via UTSports.com.
