LVFL Burrell Headed To USA 3x3 Development Camp
November 04, 2024 | Women's Basketball
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --Â USA Basketball announced today that 13 athletes are expected to participate in the 2024 USA Basketball 3x3 Women's National Team development camp Nov. 8-10 in Phoenix, and LVFL Rae Burrell is among that group.
The participants were selected by the USA Basketball Women's 3x3 National Team Committee and will be considered for future USA 3x3 national team assignments. Â Â
The camp features athletes who bring a combination of USA Basketball (5-on-5, 3x3), professional and collegiate experience. Â
Â
Participating athletes in addition to Burrell include Shakira Austin, Grace Berger, Emily Engstler, Natasha Howard, Abbey Hsu, Taylor Mikesell, Alissa Pili, Jaylyn Sherrod, Maddy Siegrist, Azurá Stevens, Sug Sutton and Brittney Sykes.Â
Â
The camp will be led by Sydney Johnson, who has served USA Basketball in multiple capacities since 2020, including leading the 2023 USA 3x3 Men's U23 World Cup team to the gold medal. Â
Burrell averaged 10.3 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing 110 games as a Lady Vol from 2018-22, tallying 1,131 points to rank No. 38 on the school's career scoring list. She was a 2020-21 All-SEC Second Team selection after averaging 16.8 ppg. and 4.6 rpg. while starting all 25 contests as a junior. She overcame an injury to start 13 times in 22 games as a senior, putting up 12.3 ppg. and 3.9 rpg.Â
A USA Trials participant for the 2021 Women's AmeriCup, Burrell has spent the past three seasons with the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. She was a first-round pick of the Sparks in 2022, going ninth overall in the draft. She has played in 69 games during that time, starting 11 of them and averaging 4.8 ppg. and 1.6 rpg. She enjoyed her best productivity as a pro in 2024, appearing in a career-high 37 contests and putting up 5.9 ppg., 1.8 rpg. and 1.1 apg.
Â
Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams "clear" the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.Â
Another LVFL, Cierra Burdick (2011-15), has been a standout on USA 3x3 teams since her Lady Vol days and has set an example for Burrell. The Charlotte native earned a bronze medal as captain of the American squad at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
