Mitsui Earns All-American Status, Advances to Round of 16 at NCAA Singles Championships
November 20, 2024 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas – Tennessee men's tennis standout Shunsuke Mitsui earned the second All-American honor of his career in the round of 32 of the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Â
Mitsui became an All-American after a hard-fought three-set victory over Cesar Bouchelaghem of Washington 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. The Shizuoka, Japan, native tallied a 3-1 advantage in both the first and third sets, and he showed excellent poise on the court in both his service and return game to secure the sets and the match.
Â
On Thursday, Mitsui will square off against Jay Friend of Arizona in the singles round of 16. The two competed against each other earlier in the fall at the ITA All-American Championships, where Friend took the match 7-5, 6-1. The time for the matchup will be announced later today. Â
Â
The senior continues the trend of Tennessee having a player earn All-American status each season since the 2018 campaign. Mitsui holds a 107-28 singles record as a Vol, nearing the top 10 in program history for career singles wins.
Â
The matches will continue to be streamed live for the duration of the tournament on ESPN+ with commentary from Cracked Racquets, and live stats will continue to be available here.
