January 29, 2024 | Men's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's basketball team is once again ranked fifth in both major polls.
Tennessee (15-4, 5-1 SEC) placed fifth in the Associated Press Top 25 Polls and the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, as announced Monday afternoon.
The Volunteers have now been featured in 51 consecutive AP Polls, the third-longest streak in the nation behind just Houston (77) and Kansas (56). It is also 14 weeks longer than the prior program record of 37. Tennessee has claimed a top-10 position in 24 of those 51 weeks, garnering a top-five spot seven times.
This is the seventh straight week the Volunteers are in the top 10, tied for the sixth-longest streak in program history. Three of the seven such instances have come during ninth-year head coach Rick Barnes' tenure, all since the 2018-19 season.
Additionally, this is the third time Tennessee has ever been ranked top-five in at least three consecutive releases. The prior occurrences were an 11-week stretch in 2018-19 and a six-week span in 2007-08.
The Volunteers earned a road victory in their lone outing last week, registering a 75-62 triumph Saturday evening at Vanderbilt behind 32 points from fifth-year guard Dalton Knecht, his fourth time reaching that number this season and third in a four-game stretch.
Tennessee earned 1,328 points in the AP Poll balloting, an improvement of 91 from last week. In the Coaches Poll, the Volunteers recorded 658 points, a slight 13-point drop, and now sit a mere 32 behind fourth-place Houston.
The Volunteers are yet again the top-ranked team in the SEC, which now has four schools in the top 25. They are joined by No. 10/8 Kentucky, No. 16 Auburn and No. 24/22 in the polls. Additionally, Ole Miss and South Carolina are both in the top five of the "receiving votes" section of each poll.
Tennessee resumes competition Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against South Carolina, live on SEC Network from Food City Center.
