Super Bowl Berth On The Line As Eight VFLs Ready For Conference Championships
January 26, 2024 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Eight Tennessee football VFLs, including two assistant coaches, play for a shot at Super Bowl LVIII as the NFL conference championships take centerstage on Sunday.
Trey Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs square off against the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens at 3 p.m. ET on CBS in the AFC Championship. The Ravens feature VFL assistant coaches Tee Martin (quarterbacks) and Chuck Smith (outside linebacker). Martin has been instrumental in Lamar Jackson's season, and he is arguably the favorite for MVP honors.
Smith is playing in the AFC Championship for the third straight season, and he is vying for a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance. Smith was outstanding in the Chiefs' 27-24 road win at Buffalo last weekend, playing all 50 snaps at right guard without allowing a sack, a hit or a penalty.
The NFC Championship will feature four Volunteers on the field when the San Francisco 49ers host the Detroit Lions at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings caught five passes for 61 yards and illustrated his punishing blocking skills in the divisional round win over the Green Bay Packers.
Active VFLs for the Lions include linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, cornerback Cameron Sutton and backup quarterback Hendon Hooker. Reeves-Maybin notched four tackles and 0.5 sacks in the divisional win against Tampa Bay, while Sutton had three tackles and one pass breakup. Emmanuel Moseley remains on injured reserve.
With VFLs representing all four teams, Tennessee is guaranteed to have a Super Bowl representative on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas.
